Online EFL grammar test

Post by Just Bob » Mon Aug 16, 2004 7:30 pm

Dear teachers.

Recently we developed a new free online test. Using this test EFL students can see their level of English Grammar and also "strong and weak sides" of their knowledge. Each topic of grammar will be analysed.

Please check the test here: http://www.elckiev.org/tests/tests_en.php

Any comments and suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Don't ask me why I took it, but I did. ;)

In the test I had, number 27 had a question that said, "People need to see they ____ achive their dreams

(achieve is spelled wrong.)

Number 90 said Marry[sic]______wear a lot of makeup.

Answers were: is used, is used to, not used to, didn't used to.

I don't think any of these are right. I would use didn't use to .

Overall it was interesting. I scored advanced, but I still seem to have trouble with use to (I think it should be used to btw) and to be used to.

Some of the items seemed to be good; others were mostly lexical items. A few things were probably British. There were a couple places I could have chosen two different answers and considered them both correct.

Anyway, I'm sure people will have fun with it.

Hi Bob,

I'm just surfing through, and I looked at the test description. It looks like you could do with some editing there - I could spot quite a few mistakes.

Well... I'd be very happy to read about all the mistakes. It's very easy to do mistakes in language that is not native for me.
First we did it in Russian and then decided to make the test (intro & results) multilingual.
But of course it doesn't excuse me.
So everything you find there would be highly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Bob.

Ok then Bob, here goes:

Welcome to the online test designed to exame your knowledge of English grammar.

Before beginning the test, please read some test-taking suggestions that will help you to better determine the level of your English.

There are 104 test questions (10 on each page), they cover most English grammar. The questions are given from a data base in random order, the number of questions at the present time is 202 . This is done to avoid the effect of automatic memorization of the answers.

Pay attention to the fact that even the difficulty of the questions has been randomized. (In our opinion, it promotes a more objective approach to the test - it involves a purely psychological factor.) So do not despair and do not close the page if you find the first question too difficult for your level. Simply answer the questions only if you know the answer.

Do not try to guess the answer if you do not know it. Just choose the option "I don't know". It will allow for a more objective evaluation; otherwise, your test results will be considered invalid (the computer will be offended with your jeers!).

After passing the test comments, your knowledge will be presented. You will be able to find out the strong and weak points of your grammar knowledge. You will also get comments concerning your level.

NB! The results of the present test cannot be an official document for job interviews or for the purposes of admission to higher educational establishments. We do not make any claims at this time. (If you want to get an official confirmation of your grammar knowledge - we invite you to take the TOEFL.)

At the present moment there exists no precise level gradation based upon grammar knowledge (and such a formula cannot exist at all), so we do not claim of knowing the ultimate truth.

We divide knowledge of English into levels guided by the experience of different courses, such as Cambridge, Oxford, Longman, etc. Because each of the aforementioned schools offers its own gradation, we tried to do something in between, having adapted it to the peculiarities of our nonnative-speaking customer.
Information on the program.

Thank you for patiently reading all the recommendations. If you are ready to start the test - we wish you luck and good English! .

I highlighted the mistakes. 'The ultimate truth' is a bit strong. Some of the lines sound a bit unnatural, but no grammar mistakes as such. Also, the word, 'gradation' would sound better if replaced with 'grading' or 'grading system'.

regards

Emile
