Short play for elementary school class

Post by nikku18 » Thu Jul 28, 2005 1:46 am

A teacher asked me if I would look for/ prepare a play for his 5th grade class to start working during our weekly English class once school starts up again after summer break. I haven't done a play yet in my two years teaching elementary school and am excited trying one, but I am still looking for ideas. There are 12 students in the class and their level is low, but they are great students (of course what teacher wouldn't say that).
Has anyone out there done any plays in the elementary school classroom? Any suggstions?

We used to do all sorts of plays with that level. They love anything slapstick. The favourite one was "The Submarine"
Have the student make up a sailor costume of some sort - all 12. Get a large pipe that is quite light, a waterproof blanket or one that can be dried easily and a jug of water, a handkerchief that has been lightly soaked in water.

The best speaking student comes in with the handkerchief and pretends to cry, wringing the handkerchief and explains to the audience that they have lost their captain from their submarine and need a new one. They ask the audience for a volunteer. The higher the status of this person, the more fun. They explain to the new captain that they don't want to lose him/her and so they will put them down below and call down the orders.
Lie the "captain" down on the floor, cover with the blanket and make a hole for the pipe to call down the orders. The captain shouldn't be able to see.
The make up a series of orders for the group of sailors
Start the engines
Foward at full speed
and so on. They can have fun making up these orders.
The last person has a pretend telescope and calls out the orders and then they say them down the line until the last person calls them down the pipe. So they get to say the same thing 12 times. It gets quite funny sometimes.
The final orders are
Enemy sighted
Fire Torpedos
We're hit!
Water coming in!

On the signal of "Water coming in" the first person in the line picks up the jug of water and passes it down the line for the last person to pour down the pipe. Only pour a little of course and have a towel ready for the poor wet captain.

I think there are a lot of these types of skits on Scout and Guide sites. They are fun and don't require that much English.
