Multicultural books for read alouds

Post by sunflowertoo » Mon Jul 17, 2006 2:10 pm

Hello,

This is my first time on the discussion forum. I am looking forward to receiving new ideas from this site.

I am looking for any suggestions for multicultural books for read alouds. I am teaching Grade 1 at a school where most students are from India, Pakistan, and Jamaica. I want to be able to use these books to help students make personal connections.

Many thanks,

Sunflowertoo

Making personal connections between the kids is a good idea. Just hope they will also learn something about the culture they find themselves in now. That will help them make connections with everyone else around them outside of the class. (In America, multiculturalist approaches tend to largely ignore or even deny (!) American culture, leaving kids with little sense of connection to other citizens from their adopted country.)
