Ideas for activities in elementary school

Post by shlompi » Sun Nov 05, 2006 11:27 am

Hi everybody :)
My name is Shlomi, a fourth year student from Israel.
This is my second year of teaching, "a beginner".
Unlike the previous year, this year i'm teaching in elementary school.
Formally, i'm trained to be teaching JHS pupils, but... the circumstances have brought me to elementary school, which I have to agree, is quit fun!!!

I found teaching little kids as an amazing experience, and so does the way of teaching, i believe, should be. Therefore, I would like to share a wonderful website that some of you might find it helpful and useful.

Any suggestions regarding games, activities, worksheets etc' would be appricieted!

Shlomi

Hi Shlomi,

I was just looking at the site you recommended and it looks interesting.
I am teaching 6 to 8 yrs and it is proving to be interesting. I am happy with the results.

I find that I like to start my classes getting the kids to come to the front and placing a paper frog over the day today and also repeating the date.
Done everyday, this allows the kids to get to know the day and months really quick.

For the months I get each child to colour in a balloon and after I stick a list of the months on the wall each child has to go to the list and stick their own balloon on the month when their birthday is.

I try to use fairy tales quite a lot, for different things- Goldilocks for teaching different parts of the house.
For example.

Well good luck.
Dean

The other thing you can do with calendar time is have the kids count the days of the month that have gone by and been covered up.
Also you can discuss the weather at this time and cover all that vocabulary and talk about the seasons and the appropriate clothing for different weather and seasons.

Check out http://www.pamseslclassroom.com for songs, games and finger rhymes etc for primary age kids.
