Korean Culture and the Classroom

Hello Everyone,
I've just completed a year of teaching in Mexico, but now I'm on my way to Korea.
I've been doing my own research about teaching in Korea so it would be great to hear about experiences from those of you there now.

I'll be teaching 6-11 year olds in the EPIK program at a public school. I'm headed for Taean in western south Korea.

I teach for the public school system, just outside of Seoul in a rather large suburb. I have been teaching for three years and I have found that the expectations in Korea are this, based on my short experience;

1. You're here as a Native Teacher presence
2. speak when spoken to
3. push buttons and gather materials
4. react, not pro-act
5. don't try to change things

This has been my experience. I dont' feel that they care about my experience or what I can add to the class other than to be the Native Speaker Presence. Its been a very frustrating experience so far.

I'm now in Korea and have been here for 2 months.

I'm sorry that you have had such a bad experience.

Nothing you've said applies to my situation here. I teach elementary school and I have complete freedom to do as I wish. I have been treated with great respect and I am allowed a great deal of creativity in
my teaching.

I'm teaching in a small town, and this may very well be the difference.
Before you put yourself through another year of torture you might consider moving to a smaller town where you are generally appreciated
for just being there.

I hope you aren't too stressed.
