I am so mystified by the controversial Laws in California, Arizona, and Massachusetts that affects ESL Students! I am aware that they are able to save money, but at what expense. The research show low performance score after proposition 227. So why would Arizona and Massachusetts embark in the expedition. We still have to educate student of all nation to insure our future security in the United States. Fruit for Thought

I believe that the problems in California and Arizona go beyond the passing of their indivdual propositions. The research I have read in [i]Forbidden Language (hopkins,gandara 2010) highlights data comprised both before and after the passing of their propositions. The findings do not categorically prove that students test results have declined or increased. After viewing the data, there seems to be an underlining issue with the quality of education in the districts tested because students were not learning in BE and now they are not vastly improving in SEI or EO. The two states must go back to the drawing board to determine where to go from here.

I also agree that the quality of the education of the students need to improve for their academics to improve. I have mixed feelings about the fact that many of the ESL students in California are taught by teachers who are not highly qualified. Teachers play such a vital part in any students’ education, so a great quality teacher can make a huge difference on one hand. On the other hand, just because you are a highly qualified teacher does not necessarily mean that you are a good quality teacher.
