Rewarding experiences

Post by 1st.gr.teach » Wed Feb 09, 2011 2:45 am

I teach a class with 16 native English speakers and 5 English language learners. I find my job very rewarding, and I am ecstatic that I am fortunate enough to learn from my students. I try to learn as much as I can about their cultures and encourage my students to tell the class about their cultural experiences.
What are some of your most rewarding experiences with your students?
How do you get your students to share their cultures with you or the class?

"old school show and tell"

I am currently teaching pre-k in a semi diverse school district. There is a good mix of blacks, whites, and Hispanics in the classroom. A few weeks ago I heard one of the non-Hispanic boys calling the hispanic boy non- American; he stated the boyHas just a mixture of brown and white. A light bulb went off and I thought of having an old fashion show and tell day where the students bring in a dish or an item that tells of their culture. I typed up a letter to parents and asked for their help to send in something and write a brief description of what is was and why it is important to their family/culture. Children bought in their items and were proud to stand in front of the room and listen to me read about the various cultures. Needless to say the day was a huge success and even the preschoolers learned a valuable lesson in diversity.
