Meeting the needs of all students

I am in my first semester of student teaching for elementary education credential program. In my second grade classroom, there are three distinct groups of students: some students who are definitely reading at 5th or 6th grade levels; some are reading at grade level; and a few who know their short vowel sounds and are starting to decode words. Since there are three groups of students, I was thinking about doing different centers. However, none of the students are independent enough.
Any ideas?
