According to an article "Performance of ELLs as a Subgroup in Large Scale Assessment," ELL students are given several accommodations. However, studies on these accommodations have been done and raise concerns for the appropriateness of some of them.

For example, research has found that many common accomodations for ELLS are not effective in helping ELLS with their language barriers . Of the 73 accomodations used throughout the US, only 11 or 15% of them were actually relevant for the students.

This raises the question of how states decide what accommodations to use with which students, and what criteria they use to make that decision. The article also raises the question of whether states actually take the time to look at research findings as criteria for their decisions.

What do you think? The article surmises that states DO NOT use research in their decisions, and that out of 8 states interviewed, only 2 use research.
