Two teacher classrooms

What would be the key to making a two teacher classroom work? I feel like having two teachers would work well as long as they each have a very defined role. In your experiences have you taught successfully with someone? If it wasn’t successful, what do you think got in the way of success?

We were friends before we taught together, had the same goals for the students and generally in life, wanted to try something new and had a brand new facility with open classrooms. We had 45 children but as the whole school was open, we often had students from other grades participate in projects - grade 6's reading with our grade 2's, bright children going to the next level math classes, school wide projects with each level contributing what they could, remedial kids going down one grade for one subject.

We had school wide meeting each week, and class meetings each break and an official one once a week to evaluate what was going on, usually Monday when we were recovered from the week.

It was truly exciting because we could bounce ideas off one another and the other teacher would pick up on things I missed and vice versa, both with the program and the children. We divided reading groups and math groups so we were responsible for certain lessons during the day and spelled each other off in periods where the children were busy so we could have extra preparation time or remedial time with one or a few children.

If one of us were sick, it didn't stop the flow as we could direct the substitute to activities easily and the substitute wasn't worried about what to do and when, nor did they just fill in the day with activities to keep the children busy. it rarely broke the mood either.

They put up walls in the fourth year and it went back to individual classrooms. Too noisy and too chaotic for most teachers was the evaluation. Not mine.
