I taught first graders last year. The only way to keep their attention is to make it fun and to vary the lessons. I never spent more then 10 minutes on one topic, though it was repated over many days, because little ones get bored fast. If you can get him moving while he's learning it's even better. The hardest part of teaching them was coming up with the demonstrative actions to go with all the vocabulary they had to learn. Spend a little time on dialogue, such as greetings. Spend a little time on vocabulary, use a lot of simple pictures. Spend some time on question and answer excercises where he'll have to plug in some of the vocabulary he's learning. Spend some time on actions, like 'stand up', 'sit down', 'put the book away', etc. And spend a little time on the alphabet using vocabulary words he's learning to go with certain letters, like 'a is for apple', 'b is for ball', etc. As he learns more vocabulary ask him what letter word is it. My students loved it when we would go over new letters and be able to include their new English names under that letter on the board. Anyway, this is what worked for me with my kids. Hope it helps.
