Hi, I am from California but would love advise from any location around the world. This semester I am going to start student teaching with ELL's and I do not have much prior experience doing so. I would like to promote learning by incoporating their language and culture into the curriculum to demonstrate the value of other cultures. I will be in a 2nd grade classroom and would like to teach a unit on "Tracing your family history". In this unit I will be asking my students to interview family members. What type of accommodations do you suggest I make for my ELL's, since the assignment will invole the students working with their native speaking parents? Any suggestions are welcome! Please respond.
Thank You! ANoel

Can you get volunteers to help them write a basic outline or notes in English at school? When I work on book reports, I just ask what happened, and let the child tell me what happened. Then I make sure it is in English on the board so he can rewrite it on a piece of paper for his teacher. It's still his work, but now he sees how is can/ should be in English.
