USA College student needing some info on ESL

I am currently a USA college student looking at ESL to become my emphasis, in elementary ed. I was wondering if someone could tell me exactly what ESL is and how it is taught. Some have said that it is not teaching English in the sense of verbs and adj. So what is it? 
Do you have to know a second language? Any info. any one can give me would be great! 
I am just trying to find my place in Elementary Ed. I know I want to be a teacher but I don't know of an emphasis. My email too is [email protected], if anyone wants to write me!
