Native American issue

I teach 50 Mexican students and 1 Peruvian. In addition to English, I also teach them social studies about their country. Many of these students are part Native American. I've been told that some Latinos do not like to be linked to Native American culture, i.e. refering to "their" Native American heritage. I don't agree with this idea but wish to respect their wishes. Anyone have any ideas about this?

maybe you could treat it as if you're teaching about a foreign culture. Don't ask them about it as if they were Native Americans. If the topic is required, it doesn't matter what they think they are. Everyone needs to learn about the culture.
