So, I've been teaching at a bushiban in Kaohsiung for the last six months and have recently been approached with an job opportunity at an elementary school. The paid vacations seem nice and location is much better for me, but I've heard that because the class is mandatory and sizes are huge, elementary school can be quite unproductive and draining. Any thoughts?

I have taught in elementary schools in Kaohsiung for the past 7 years and really like it. The class sizes are large and mixed levels can make it tough but I like it much better than Bushiban classes. The kids are much more alert in the morning than the spent shells that show up for Bushiban classes. The regular 8:30 to 4 hours can't be beat either. Depends on the grades you would teach as well. I prefer grades 1 and 2 where they're still a bit afraid of the teacher and easier to control. Also, for long term stay in Taiwan the 3 months off a year is a lot more civilized than the 2 weeks you get at a bushiban. There's a job at my elementary school available for September in fact. 4 classes every morning of 40 minutes each at $600 per class. works out to $48,000 a month and you're done at noon every day. contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions.
