Students at different levels of English

Post by Vin » Thu May 25, 2006 3:03 am

Hi all! Currently teaching in South Korea in a Hagwan situated about an hour outside of Seoul. I teach 6 classes continuously on a friday (no rests in between) but in each class are 7-12 pupils all with completely DIFFERENT levels of english. They've put them all in their appropriate age groups. They work from their own text books. Therefore each student is studying a completely different topic! What the?! How can I effectively teach each student if they're all studying different topics and they're all on different levels? Has anyone else come across this problem before?

One of the things I can suggest you do (although I do not know how much freedom you have with the curriculum) is even though they are working on different proficiency levels have them work on the same skill and then you can differentiate the instruction based on their level. What I mean is for example if you are doing a writing/grammar lesson on adjectives and the writing prompt is something like…My favorite food is ________. It is _______ and _______... This is doable for you lower proficiency levels however you can increase the level of difficulty by having the higher proficiency students perform more tasks by introducing more skills such as comparing and contrasting by modifying the lesson to include tasks such as…The food I hate is ________ it is unlike, different, nothing like, (opportunity to introduce new vocabulary) my favorite food because …
