While I'm at it ...

any ideas for a basic 1st grade EFL cirriculum? I'm in the process of trying to design one for a school I'm going to be teaching at in Honduras. There isn't a ton of resources available to me. The children will have already taken kindergarten and learned (lets hope) the basic alphabet.

I will have them every day for a couple of hours.

Thanks!

You may well have to teach the alphabet. When you do, be sure to start with phonics (sounds of the letters rather than the names of the letters.
"Get Ready", a K-1st grade course by Felicity Hopkins, Oxford Univ Press uses this method to great effect. I use that series (2 books) for the 1st year. Oral English MUST precede written English, at least a few steps ahead.

I would plan on teaching the alphabet, too. I just gave an informal test to a girl from Mexico, to see what some of her skills are before she starts first grade here. She went to kindergarten in Mexico, but they didn't teach the names of letters or their sounds yet. The other kids in her class here are already reading!!!!! You might be lucky if they can even write and recognize their names. I know you're in a different country, but the schools might be similar.
