The World Around Us
Hi there, wangzhenjiang
Perhaps you could integrate it with geography (both physical geography and social geography) topics covered in class; kids at this age seem to start developing an interest in the big wide world. (Just before they become teenagers and retreat into an inner world of me-me-me, that is! Ha ha!)
So maybe you could do the names of countries in English. And then take it from there. Perhaps a project on the place they would most like to go in the world (in English, of course! Well, MOSTLY... have to keep this really focused and simple for 6th grade primary kids!)
And then, from there, maybe you could talk (in L1) about how useful another language like English or Spanish or French might be when travelling abroad.
And from there, you could get into basic greetings ("Hello, how are you? I'm fine thanks, and you?" And roleplays. Etcetera.)
This might naturally develop their interest in the utility of English rather than simply being TOLD that they HAVE TO learn it... just because!
Hope it helps,
Tanuki
