Hi guys,

Was wondering if anyone could help me by suggesting a good beginners syllabus? I'm about to start teaching a beginners course but there are no materials available. I am currently preparing all my own stuff and getting ideas from the internet, but would like the security of a syllabus to follow as well. I will have to order the books online, as there are no bookshops anywhere near where I live (remote Indonesia), so I will not have the opportunity to browse through them first. Any suggestions of a good/ fun syllabus that's suitable for primary school beginners?

I really liked the "Let's Go" series, especially the chants. There is a good picture dictionary that I used as the textbook and I made puppets out of the characters in the phonics books. There are lots of songs and tapes or CD's as I remember.

In Systemic Functional Grammar, the Australians use exciting picture book stories, told over and over to start the children off so a few of those might be good as well. I just set up pictures and made books with the children that illustrated local stories and that seemed to work well too. They also drew and illustrated their own stories so we had quite a library of them at the end to pass on to future classes.

There's a fair amount of stuff online, in the form of publishers' support material for their coursebooks, that should give you quite a few ideas, pointers and structure:
