Teaching "Who`s, who, mine, yours, etc."

Hello everyone,

I have a "brain block" about teaching. I have come across a lesson where I have to teach possessions (ie. Who`s, who, mine, your`s, etc.). How do you teach that and what games or activities are available for this? Anything will help.

Be sure you teach whose (not who's), yours, mine, his, hers, ours, and theirs, with no apostrophe. I don't know any games per se, but if you got something from each student, you could do questions and answers. (Whose book is this? It's mine. It's hers...etc.)

The only thing with practising in the manner described is that there is no real reason why the people to whom the items belong could not just say 'Hey, that's mine!', and thereby avoid the need for a "middle man" continually pointing owners of objects out to the questioner - I mean, everybody's in the same room, and within earshot of everybody else!

It might therefore be better to practise names with the addition of the genitive (Whose steroids are these? Hmm, probably Arnold's!) and base the whole thing upon some made-up caricatures who aren't present (you could even include your DOS in the cast of characters :P ). The possessive pronouns aren't easy and perhaps are not really necessary to intensively practise beyond 'That's mine' or 'Is this yours?', and I suspect that names < > possessive adjective+noun do a lot more of the work of referring back and forth (Tom finally sold his car). Could be wrong though, just some thoughts here. :wink:
