The Doll's House and Death of a Salesman

Post by Happy Lunatic » Sat May 21, 2005 12:20 am

I've been teaching the Doll's House and the Death of a Salesman in South Korea. Both have been very effective for teaching English and vocabulary. The themes in the books offer a lot to discuss and the female students really relate to the characters of Nora and Linda.

The texts I use are half English and half Korean. They are published by YBM and are only like 4,500 won, which students love because they aren't expensive. I'm not exactly sure how exact the Korean translation is, but I think they understand it well enough. Basically, I get them to read them to read two pages of the Korean outloud and then I get them to read the English- pausing to explain the definitions of words in English.

I think that drama and literature is a great way to teach English. I also been using the show Friends. I would play the show first on the television and then get them to read the script. It gets a lot of laughs and they love slang.

Well, good luck and tell me what you think.
