Have them read news articles and debate the pros and cons of the points made. Voice their OWN opinions. Pick apart the article itself: is the source valid? are the statistics believable? did the article cover the topic thoroughly enough?

Have one person bring a presentation (from a hobby or recent trip), and the others have to ask questions.

Make a board game with lots of questions. Give pairs of students 10 minutes each, then switch partners. Good way to introduce each other, especially wish shy students.

I made two "topics" classes for advanced Japanese students. One was a semi-formal debate class. The other was Science Topics (for technical people and a couple of non-technical ones who simply had a strong interest in science). Both were huge successes.

First thing - do they know eachother? If not, then get them talking to eachother in eg. groups of 2 or 3, find out where they come from, what they do, why they want to learn English, what tastes they have regarding music, movies, etc. Then they can report back to the class, introducing the other person.

Be interested yourself. Ask them questions, and think about how you can use their answers to lead into further questions. Sometimes a conversation starts like that, you get some boring standard answers, then suddenly a student will say something very interesting, like "I used to be a bodyguard for the president" or "I think gay people should be castrated" or something like that, and suddenly you've got yourself a lively conversation, and all the other students are queueing up to ask the next question.

Have a look at

http://iteslj.org/questions/whatif.html

I had a nice conversation class with these questions. I wrote the best questions on lots of bits of paper and each student had to choose a question, read it out clearly to the class, and then choose a student to ask, always with the follow-up question "Why?"

If you look at my thread "How to reduce ttt" you will find a nice activity called "backs to the board" which you can use with all levels. I guarantee that the students will enjoy that, and 10 - 11 students is an ideal number.

Hope this helps.

Hello. I am new here. I just thought that maybe you could watch a short scene from a movie. After viewing the scene, the teacher could ask the students what they thought of the scene or the actors and actresses, and what happened in the scene. Next ask the students if something ever happened to them like this. If so, ask them to tell the class about it. This is only one activity that could be done with them to stimulate conversation. News stories could also be used in class to discuss current events.
