How much time spent on ums and such?

Is teaching English communication teaching a communications course? Are you saying that filled pauses, discourse markers, etc. are not part of the language? Are you against "teaching" Pragmatics?

Maybe you should put your above question to those students who say that they want to speak/use English as a native does. What do you think they mean by such statements/requests/desires?

Yes, I teach all those things but mostly by example, unconsciously and imperfectly. I am sure that the students would want to have them included if they knew they existed. Thanks for making me aware of the ideas. I will pursue them in my studies of Systemic Functional Linguistics. I am trying to do the same thing with writing but I hope it will be useful to extend the study to speaking as well.
