They aren't copular. But it's interesting to see why not.

I guess about the deepest I get is decoding the grammar codes in e.g. the OALD7:
(paint sthg (with sthg)): [VN-ADJ] > The walls were painted yellow. [also VN-N, V]
The hyphen distinguishes linking verbs from ditransitives ([VNN]).
