Mixed levels- help!

Post by seoulj » Tue Apr 01, 2003 9:53 am

I have some teaching experience, but I have to admit that I am out of my league! I have been thrown to the wolves with about 20 children ranging in age from 6 to 12 and all different levels! Some of the 10 year olds don't know the alphabet, and some of the 6 year olds can use several tenses with ease! Do you have any suggestions?! Let me add that active games and activities are NOT an option due the fact that my classroom is TINY! There is no room so stand up or move around. Please help! Many Thanks!

Seoulj---

I've been studying in New Zealand for two years to be an elementary school teacher, im in San Diego CA right now (where I'm from originally) but am going back to New Zealand next year to finsh my studies. So maybe I can help you hopefully.

Try pairing up the kids who have advanced English language skills with the kids who are struggling with their English. This will help to solidify English language concepts with the advanced kids, and will help to give the not so advanced kids better self confidence in learning English. You might also try to preparing something that the advanced kids can do on their own without any help from you while while you spend more time with the children who are struggling--- maybe set aside a certain amount of time per day on something like this. Also, let your kids' parents know your concerns as well-- parents all over the world love their children so much and want them to succceed and be happy, and every good teacher takes advantage of this fact (not to make their own job any easier mind you, but rather to have their children learn more and be more successful.).

I admire you greatly for taking on such a challenge with the diverse age groups--- I'll be facing the same thing soon when I have my own group of 3 - 6 year olds in an ESL/EFL kindergarten in China in a few months.

If you need any more help just post a reply here, send me a PM, or email me at [email protected] and I'll get back to you as soon as I can :-).

Good luck with your kids now :-).

Do you have to work with all of these students at the same time? Or is it possible to take smaller groups at the same level at different times? I had a similar problem for about a month when I worked with two first graders, one who wasn't in Kindergarten the year before, and didn't know the alphabet, and one who was in Kindergarten and had little difficulty reading, but her parents wanted me to work with her one on one to make sure she understood everything and wasn't struggling with English like they do. We were able to move the one back into Kindergarten after a month of trying to catch her up, so she could be at her academic level. That made things easier and less stressful for me.
