(quote) English learners today PICK UP the language much better than those who tried to study it 30 or 40 years ago.

Hi!

There are number of other meanings to the verbal phrase pick up
besides the one Sita has given.

"pick up" (intransitive) = to improve > 'our sales have picked up lately'

"pick up (transitive) = to catch (an illness) > 'SARS can easily be picked up if you do not take precautions'

= to make the acquaintance of (someone of opposite sex) > 'she is well-known as a girl who can easily be picked up'

= to collect something or someone > 'I will pick you/the parcel up at your front door at 10am'

= to become aware of > have you picked up yet that the latest fashion colour is yellow?'

= to detect a noise/signal > 'can you pick up Moscow on your radio?'

There's something for you to work at!
