Specific ESL teaching material

Post by Francine Spielmann » Fri May 23, 2003 5:24 pm

Hello Everyone,
We are looking for teaching material targeted to radio and television professionals. We are located in Ottawa, which is the capital of Canada.
Does anyone know about existing material that could be used for speaking and listening at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels?
Your help in this matter will be greatly appreciated
Francine

TV material

Francine

Maybe fifteeen years ago our Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) ran a series called "Hello Australia" aimed at ESL learners. It was hosted by George Donikian and Kay Stammers.

It probably wouldn't be culturally appropriate for a Canadian audience, and is quite dated now; but if you get in touch with SBS (SBS.com.au) you might be able to get something going in the way of ideas - and come by some material as well. They're in the business of multicultural television, and would have a lot of current material (at a price, no doubt).

I have no connection with SBS but used their videos and got ideas from them for my own teaching.

Good luck.

Norm.

TRY TO USE SANDRA ELBAUM'S GRAMMAR IN ACTION. IT HAS LISTENINGS AND GOOD GRAMMAR STUFF. FOR BEGINNER LEVEL, GRAMMAR IN ACTION WOULD BE GOOD.

To be honest I don't see the point of teaching ESP to any group of students who have not successfully got through an intermediate level intergrated skills course. This is because up to (and including) intermediate level you need to focus on the basics; that is grammar and the 4 skills.

Best of luck
Stephen
