improving english conversation

Post by sunnahprincess_2 » Sun Sep 03, 2006 4:18 pm

i teach grade 1 and 2 here in Karachi,Pakistan. it is pretty obvious that my students dont have english as their mother tongue , but the primary language at our school is english. how is it that ican help my students communicate with the teachers as well as the students in english, because as they are not fluent with english they feel uncomfortable talking to others in english. i try to tell them to talk in english otherwise they will not be allowed to play or take part in something else and somewhat things have improved but basically the problem is that they cannot express themselves and so they tend to use their mother tongue instead.
what methods can i use to help them improve their english both verbal and written? i do read out many stories and ask comprehension questions. but what else is needed?

hope you can help me with this.
