Dusty linguistics professor 1: Moving on from the invigorating discussion on the use of the present perfect in American English, I was wondering if we could perhaps now consider semantics, specifically, linguistic prototypes.

Dusty linguistics professor 2: Certainly.

DLP1: Let's consider then the word 'dog', as opposed to the concept DOG.

DLP2: Well, if you want to know what a dog is, look no further than your girlfriend. She's a right dog, she is.

(DLP1 sits silent for ten seconds or so before replying)

DLP1: Be that as it may, Professor Metal...I'd like now to ask, do you know those men who insert small rodents up each other?

DLP2: Yes.

DLP1: Oh, you do? So people like that are your friends?

DLP2: That's not what I was saying.

DLP1: No, it's too late, that's what you said.
