This series was cancelled in the UK because some people thought it was racist. I think anyone who has taught English will find it funny.

Funny if you are one of those who agree with Alf Garnett and enjoy "The Black and White Minstrels" |

My students in China loved this show. I was worried they wouldn't get the jokes but they did. The comedy seems to transfer across cultures with this one. On YouTube you can get some great videos with subtitles, which really helps students! |

I'm sure my students would like it too. Racist stereotypes are still a popular form of comedy here. We could all black-up to watch it, make an event out of it. |

It’s still a popular TV program in Malaysia. Bearing in mind it was made in the 70s and 80s, is it so offensive? People from different countries will generally have unique mannerisms, and the writers have used these, admittedly in an often exaggerated way.
The character of Alf Garnett, on the other hand, sets out to be offensive, and the storylines deliberately include his dislike of certain groups. |

Exaggerating the 'unique' mannerisms of people from different countries is pretty much the definition of a racist stereotype. Yes, it's offensive, especially when people are ridiculed for it. That is the only joke in MYL.
Back in the 70s, it wasn't that big a deal. Thankfully, things have moved on in the last half-century. And actually, the real difference with Alf Garnett is that it was satirical. He was supposed to be the butt of the joke. Although of course, the racists that agreed with him didn't always get it.
Neither have any place in a modern classroom. Leave them in the past where they belong. |

The humor holds up, at least to those willing to take it in

I've heard some people argue that subtitles can become a crutch, but I agree that, on the whole, they're very useful to students |

Sure, if racist jokes are your thing, it must be a riot. |

Who decides what is and isn’t racist(or for that matter sexist, homophobic, etc.)? These arguments go nowhere. |

Ah right, so let's not bother trying. All Mexicans are rapists and criminals. All Muslims are terrorists. Black-up for laughs. Ridicule foreigners. Anything goes. |
