I plan on living overseas permanently, how can I apply for non-resident status in the US? Is this possible? Or do I have to get permanent residency in another country first? |

I am American and have lived abroad for 20+ years. I have never heard of this. Why do you want to do it? |

Given the present US government, I quite understand why. Unfortunately, as I understand US law, there isn't any such thing. There is such a thing as non-resident ststus in Canadian law, a topic which is frequently discussed here. Perhaps that is what the OP is thinking of? |

naturegirl, do you mean permanent residency in a foreign country for tax and voting purposes?
For taxes, check out the IRS web site. Look for form 2555 and instructions. The instructions will list the requirements for eligibility to file taxes on a non-resident of the U.S. status.
As for voting purposes, I don't know. |
