I was looking for some help with some cheap flights from Melbourne to Recife. So far it's not looking too good. Unfortunately, Australia is in the middle of nowhere so they can charge what they like. I'm looking at breaking the trip up perhaps in L.A. I can fly return to L.A for about 1600 AU dollars. So I guess I was wondering how much a flight from L.A - Recife, or L.A to Rio would be? Any other suggestions of cheaper routes is welcomed! |

I have the same problem. The main stumbling block is that the places that sell 'cheap tickets' only sell seats on flights with 'partner airlines', so if you want it cheap you have to seek out the airlines yourself.
Going through the US is fiendishly expensive, and going via NZ/Tahiti/Chile even moreso. Unsurprisingly, Brazil has close ties with Portugal, and consequently there are a lot of cheap fights from Lisbon and to a lesser extent, Madrid.
Try http://portal.varig.com.br/us/varig/index_html, http://www.tap-airportugal.pt/eportal/v10/EN/jsp/index.jsp and http://www.sas.se/Pages/Requirement/Requirements.aspx for the Lisbon/Madrid -> Brazil leg. It's somewhere to start, anyway.
Air Portugal currently have 350 Euro return tickets from Lisbon to Salvador, Bahia (I assume. It says 'Sal') - which is between Recife and Rio. Unfortunately the maximum stay is only 21 days (Ticket clause says "Changes: any time with a penalty of Eur100 for reissue/revalidation", so extension may be possible for an extra 100 Euros), but at that price you could use it as a one-way.
Getting a cheap flight from AU to Iberia should be more straightforward.
My plan is to look for standby flights on both legs, and party on the stopover.
Most return tickets have short shelf lives and can't be extended (or so Zuji told me). The 12 month tickets are a lot more expensive. Consequently I'll be using one-way tickets. |
