Sometimes it seems that Bahrain is just an annexe to Saudi Arabia ! When I am in Manama I am always struck by the number of cars with Saudi plates.

My girlfriend is behind the wheel of our car with Saudi plates every weekend. She's from over the bridge. Most of our Saudi female friends drive on Bahrain at the weekend. They love it! And they've been to Bahraini driving schools!

Causeway linking the two countries completed in late 1986 with Saudi money gives road access to the island state.

Unsurprisingly many Saudis and ex-pats scoot over to experience a refreshing change from KSA.

Yes this year sees the 20th anniversary of the King Fahad Causeway linking Khobar and Bahrain.

The rest of the world seem not to have noticed this impressive engineering feat. It is surprising how many people think Bahrain is still an island.

There's a long stretch of holidays coming up after the week-end.

Not many things to do here.

Any suggestions?

And, no, I don't have a car.

You could go on pilgrimage. If Mecca/Makkah is not to your taste try somewhere else. Canterbury. Mount Athos. Rome. Jerusalem.
