I'm going on a trip this three day weekend to South-west jeollanamdo.
We plan to take in Bosoeng tea plantation and Lands End( ) or DdangGgut Maul but just wondering if anyone has got down that way and got any recommendations on accomadations and other things to do...
We have a car so that is no problem with transportation...
Looking foward to it!!! |

Take a trip from to ϵ. It's an island about 45 minutes away by boat and you can put your car on the ferry too. It's very peaceful, but the atmosphere on the beach at night is terrfic. They even have tents on the beach with karioke machines. After a few beers it great fun. There is a plethora of ι accomodation, as well as some motels near the port area. Ferries run daily. is also quite nice, but the roads bewteen ddangggeut and Yeosu aren't too good. |

I just made my yearly jaunt to the southwest coast last week: did Bogildo by car ferry from Wando, and it has some nice beaches and a lot of history, some famous Korean poet lived there during the Joseon Dynasty and etched poetry in rocks on the cliffs. I took the walk down a nice path to it, other out of the way sights on the island - if you know Korean you could read the signs, otherwise you'll need some local help.
Nearer to Wando is Sinjido and a beach on it called Myeongsashimri. It was in the Lonely Planet when I first went two years ago and I make it a yearly thing because the water is great for swimming, though the coast guard boats get a bit antsy when I swim out to the middle of the bay, which is relatively shallow and very warm. Long beach, happening place, I always enjoy it.
DON'T go south of Boseong to Yulpo beach, promoted as having salt water green tea pools. It's highly overrated. Basically a swimming pool too full to be worth standing in line to dip in green water, I didn't bother anyways. The beach isn't great at low tide, mucky and seeweedy in parts. Not worth the extra half hour out of one's way.
Check out Wolchulsan mountain. There's a steep but nice walkway stairs and path to the top, past a creek with small falls great to drink from if no one's above you (because I personally like to wade in the pools that form in places, to cool down on the climb. Near Wolchulsan is Dogapsa where some monk is super-famous in Japan and draws many tourists. I like going to these beautiful buildings and grounds in the mountains, and Dogapsa is well worth it compared to many, but not so different I guess.
I could give you specific directions to other places but I'm heading off now to see "The Island", the first English film I'll have seen in Korean theaters in a long time (I go to French and Spanish films in Busan usually). |

Probably a bit too north for your liking, but...
I was in the Jollanamdo area this past weekend for the first time. Fairly nice. If you don't mind spending a bit of money, the Dam-yang Spa and Resort is quite nice. T/Dam-yang's about 30 minutes north-east of Gwahng-joo and there's lots of fresh air and some pretty good scenery. Seems like the whole town of Dam-yang is based on/obsessed with bamboo(bamboo forest, bamboo theme park, bamboo museum, bamboo wine and restaurants), but I think it might be worth at least a day trip.

Maybe it's a bit more inland than what you were looking for? |

Try Sorak-Do (South of Goheung). 1/2 the island is a leper colony the other half is open to the public. Very pretty and peaceful. Some of the old (colonial period) buildings are open and you can freely wander about them. An old prison and mortuary come to mind.
Don't wander over to the leper side of the colony (easy to do if you don't mind the signs). It can be a bit creepy but I really like the place. |
