I'm about to leave a private school in July and can thoroughly recommend "CAS" to anyone seeking a reputable school for a summer school (approx 5000Y for 3 weeks) or for a more long term appointment. This private school in Zhaoqing caters to well-off families all over China and unlike most Government schools, has small class sizes and good resources. It even has an olympic size pool and modern gymnasium! The school is set into the mountain but only 5 minutes or 12Yuan by taxi from the city centre. The school has a heavy emphasis on English tuition so there are 8 foreign teachers here. Having so many foreigners to share one's experiences and outings has made our stay so much more enjoyable. The school provides free transportation for students and teachers who have a long weekend every second week. So visiting Zhuhai, Shenzhen Sanshui, Macau etc is so easy and affordable.

Zhaoqing is a small but scenic city surrounded by lakes and mountains about an hour and 1/2 from Guangzhou. The Seven Star Lakes and Dinghu Mountains are famous attractions very close to the city. The former is within walking distance from the school and a yearly pass is a must. The city has some good supermarkets where westeners can buy their unsweeten bread, cheese, yoghurt, pasta, cereals etc and some 4 star hotels that serve great western meals for under 30 yuan.
The apartments are relatively small but have cable TV and ADSL internet. The normal pay is about average but this is a very cheap place to live. Generally speaking, it's good to see posts such as this; positive recommendations from other teachers.

However, having read John's FAQ the living / working environment at CAS is far too regulated for me; lights out at midnight!

Give us a break, please!! If downloading of pornography on a school computer means loss of job, I'm sorry. Similarly if you want to fool around with students (especially just before or in class) then I suggest you go somewhere else. (Note:Smoking permitted in one's unit...not in public on CAS property) again sorry!
Anyone who has to wear a teacher's badge or worse still calls himself "teacher" must be totally unsure of who he is. It is akin to a king having to wear his crown everywhere he goes, so someone may actually believe he is a king. Those who have ever read and understood the king, warrior, lover and magician archetypes will understand what I mean.
So I dare say "teacher" Lindsay you must have some identity crisis or could it be that you dont have formal university teaching qualifications and therefore have some chip on your shoulder?
As for your woeful conclusions, CAS is quite the opposite. Any spare time we have, is our own and there is no curfew. Not that I like to be out passed midnight, but we have 24hr security and the gates are never locked. Moreover, we can spend our spare time walking through the 7 Star lakes when we have 3 or 4 hour breaks. Most teachers have a light workload of 12-14 x 40 minute classes so there is ample free time. Of course there is the gym and the 50 meter pool if fitness is your goal. Let me assure would-be applicants, YOU could do a hell-of-a-lot worse than here.

I don't geddit... did Lindsay say something really offensive that got deleted? All I can see is her saying the job wouldn't be for her, and then a scary response...
Of course, I'm all for the introduction of random abuse- I feel it adds a certain zip to any discussion forum. I would have to question the name 'gerard49': it suggests some kind of identity crisis in which the person feels that they MUST be a number in order to fit in. Also, 'gerard' is a name only for total losers.

The original post on this thread was a sensible, genuine offer of a good school. After the second post, everything went down hill. That is precisely why intelligent teachers are leaving this forum.....soon, only the trolls and the moderators will be left.
