I need some insight:

I want to teach in China, but I have a criminal record from the U.S. ---one DUI (drunk driving) and one arrest for pot , about 10 grams, (no conviction). Both of these arrests were over ten years ago.

I taught in Korea and this was never an issue.

So, am I out of luck for China? Can I get a job without a "no criminal record" certificate?

Is this a federal law, local law, a particular school's preference?
I have noticed that some potential employers ask for the certificate, and some don't.

Please advise me on this.

Thanks very much in advance.

I have been in China for over three years in Liaoning and Tianjin and they have never asked me for it. I was looking at a job at Ameson in Nanjing and they asked for it, but of the hundreds of others I have seen, I was never asked

I would not sweat it.

As I understand it, only the SARs of the PRC have the ability (read 'desire'/'inclination') to conduct such checks. I know for a fact that here in HK such checks are carried out as it is part of immigration regulations for employment that no criminal record is held (and you have to sign to this effect).

I must say that I have always been somewhat disturbed by the sheer non-existence of such background checks on the mainland. Considering the number of teachers there who work with kids, it would, I feel, be beneficial for everyone concerned if potential employees there had their backgrounds scanned.

It must, after all, be one of only a very small number of states in which it is possible to work with children without first having your background checked out.

If you still are in your bad habit you shouldn't come here; but if you have gotten rid of boozing and taking drugs I can't see any problem for you.
It is true that you don't stand a big risk of being vetted for such misdemeanours of your past.

But just stay clean when on your job here!

Of course, If you like to get drunk on a weekend China isn't the place for you but if you like perving on your students and plastering their pics plus lewd comments on the net, welcome aboard.

Yes, compared with the on-going behaviors of some of my peers, your offenses were mild indeed. Do you ever take the name of the Lord in vain?

Value judjments on my character are perhaps in some contexts meaningful, however, I am quite honestly am in need of legal knowledge. The moral comments are, I Know, a value, but for now are not digested as earnest insight.

Am I really uncool for this?

I have a friend who had "convicted drug smuggler" in his passport (not that he WAS one -- it's a long and disturbing story how that got there), but he managed to get into China fine. He did come through a program, though. Nevertheless, he had no problem going between China and HK several times.
