Hi,

I've been offered a job in Istanbul in a k12 school but they say they can only apply for a work permit on my behalf if I have a residency permit beforehand. Now I know about the $300 / month you have to prove and all the other details, the problem is the earliest I can get an appointment to arrange the permit is April! My tourist visa will have nearly expired by then and I simply can't wait to start work for that length of time. The school said they can offer me a work contract and I can show that to the consulate in the UK and I can then work legally, but that would mean actually flying back to England and then back to Turkey, which I seems ridiculous also (not to mention expensive). Does anyone have any advice for me? What other options do I have?

Thanks

go to Kumkapı down the hıll from Sultanahmet---you can rent a 1 room apartment on a monthly basıs wıth no emlak fees or deposıts for about 400 US per month.

I think you are misunderstanding my predicament Gloomy - I am currently renting a place for less than that and I am more than happy with it, that's not the issue. The issue is I have been offered a job, but in order for them to apply for a work permit on my behalf they require me to obtain a residency permit beforehand, only the earliest I can get an appointment to get one is in April. My question is, is there any way I can get a residency permit before April, because that is simply too long to wait. I was thinking would it be possible to arrange an appointment at an Emniyet outside of Istanbul?

Are you even reading my posts? The point is the school won't apply for a work permit without me first having a residency permit, i.e. they won't let me work for them until April. So I guess my only option is to work illegally for a different school that doesn't care about permits (at least until April)....I hear it's pretty common practise here but I wanted to avoid work illegally if I could.

Steve, how did this work out for you? I haven't been online for awhile and just now see your predicament.

I don't think you needed to get to a police station in your district. Check online for another one that has appointments available sooner. This is getting to you very late and I hope you were able to get the information you needed long ago.

I got my RP in Izmir in one week and there were no appointments. At least in Izmir, the process was like this.

1. Get together all your document, go to the tourist police to drop off the forms. (No appointment needed.)
2. Get a slip of paper telling you how much to pay, go downstairs to the tax office and pay for the permit, then go to the black window (where the guy isn't there half the time) and get the receipt they give you stamped.
3. Go back upstairs and cut in front of the line. (They tell you to do this.) Hand in all the forms, and pay for the blue book.
4. Get a reciept promising the residency permit by a certain date.
5. Pick up the permit at the appointed time.
6. After you get the residency permit, a police officer will stop by unannounced in the middle of the day at wherever you're staying to ask some questions. In my case, since I don't speak Turkish and the officer doesn't speak English, the hotel found a helpful person from one of the nearby businesses who was bilingual.

Regards,
~Q
