Dusty oasis on the edge of the Empty Quarter. Sounds vaguely romantic in an Arabian nights sort of way? It isn't.
Shiia, so everyone else looks down on them.
Interesting weekend market - camels, sheep and goats. |

SaharaDesert, what's your idea of a social life? Is there a "must-have" on your list of things you like to do socially? |

I guess I am looking at a few things:
Being able to join an all women's gym at a 4 or 5 star hotel ?
Going to malls alone ?
Being able to sit at a coffee shop or buy books at a bookstore ?
I know that there are no cinemas so I would just get cable and buy a DVD player and rent movies. |

I lived there. The social life ... ahum ... picks self up from floor ... non-existent. Some get trashed on hooch in their rooms and one guy was so far gone he memorably (for us - doubt he knew a thing about it) got deported in an ambulance! Some of a certain persuasion make 'friends' with locals.
You can go shopping. Me and a few other guys would take off into the desert and climb hills, but as you are female you won't be doing that. Bahrain was quite a popular weekend destination but that eats up your savings. There's Jarir Bookstore but when I was there a few weeks ago the book section was useless. Luxury hotels - there is one but have never been. Unless there is a seperate women's gym you won't be allowed into the men's one. Watching TV is your best option. |

Having lived there, there is no womens gym; there are few hotels, intercontinental hotel a nice for weekend break if youre interested in looking at brown palm trees from your window, full of dust. There are some nice cafes at the premises, there are plenty of malls that you could go alone and enjoy a nice shopping spree and a nice corner for you to sip on your coffee and contemplate on your move. Jarir book store is huge, I am talking about the new one, but has it opened up yet? No! This was 4 months ago when I last saw it. Rent movies, good luck!! I am a DVD collector and couldnt find a decent place, even though I am saudinised and with a car lol.....
Your best bet would be to have OSN subscribed to keep yourself sane, but how much tv are you planning to watch? Hasa has some nice places you can go out for a walk; problem is how are you going to get there? Plenty of South African expats working there, who are always active on the weekends, you could get to know them. If you want more detailed info PM me, I am still near by. |
