Denise,
I think half these threads seem to be about that. You'd never know this was a teacher's forum. I'm pretty sick of a lot of this crap that's been going on this forum as of late. |
Likewise. There've been a number of punch-ups over teacher misconduct issues lately. What concerns me most here is the increased vocality of teachers who defend their relativistic views of appropriate behavior. On one hand they preach tolerance by saying, "If it's right for me, that's OK. If you think it's wrong that's your opinion". But on the other hand, such teachers attack others who take a stand about which things are clearly wrong or unprofessional for a teacher to do.
The basis of the attack is that one person doesn't have the authority to make a statement about what is right or wrong for a teacher to do.
While a 'code of ethics' may not be established in this industry, there do remain individual school rules to refer to - it wouldn't take much research to find these. For example, I have a colleague who drinks heavily on school property. He can argue all he wants that it's his right to do this. But when the headmaster comes into the office and finds a dozen beer cans there in violation of the rules, that argument doesn't hold much water.

Well said, Gordon!
Although when I said something like that a while back, I got a comment along the lines of 'poor Laura', because of course objecting to the 'crap' on this forum means I am automatically a humourless Feminazi. An easy way to undermine someone's point, of course. Grow up, people!
Moderators, where are you? This is general discussion yes, but on teaching, no?

| I must say, as one of those engaged in the Great Debate Over Teachers' Ethics (And Whether They Exist), I was a bit disappointed to find none of the sleazy sex this thread promised. I mean if all the threads become consumed by the aforementioned debate, where will we go when we need to get away from it all? Ah well, back to the China forum. |

No, I think that this thread should be deleted ... it's a general JOB forum, and I agree that there really isn't a need for this waste of my bandwidth.
Cheers,
Dave |

| Dear Dave, If you're deleting all the threads about teacher's morality can we all have a couple of GB extra email space. In fact you could give us the Hard Disk, and keep the othr threads on a floppy. |

Are you moralizing about the moralizers, SJ? I seem to recall you deep in the fray on one such thread.

Dave didn't say he was deleting threads about teachers' morality. Furthermore, the thread I started (which I assume is one of the threads you are alluding to) was about teachers' conduct, not morality. You can be an amoral individual and yet still conduct yourself as a professional on the job.
I'm no longer posting on the thread (re: conduct) but if Dave were to delete it, I would have a problem with that. I've broken no rules here. |

Your conduct is your behaviour or the manner in which you do something and is based on morals! As for being someone who is amoral but still conducts themselves appropriately, I can't quite fathom. Also surely you mean immoral, as you have judged "his" behaviour to be wrong and therefore not just something outside moral order!
Hairsplitting maybe but you did start it! |

Yeah, I think I was one of the victims... ha ha ha
Just out of curiosity, if the Man himself wants this thread deleted (and I'm not saying I agree--I think it's amusing--nothing wrong with that!), then why is it still here?

I agree with Dave--this thread is a waste of space and the OP should never have started it.
all best Dave

Capergirl,
I don't think Dave has an issue with the thread you started, but more about how it developed and what was said on it. I think you'd agree it got a little out of hand. |

As did the Lure of the Exotic Partner thread and that wasn't deleted, nor was it a teaching-related topic as my Conduct Unbecoming thread was. I believe Mr. Jones took offense to the opinions of the OPs, not the subject matter. As Shaman said, he did get very much "in the fray", so I refuse to believe that I and others have somehow offended his sensibilities with the topics. There have been other topics that certainly merited removal more than anything that I have posted. What about the thread on breast size on the General Forum or the one about p*nis size on the China Off-Topic forum? Surely those were a waste of bandwidth? No? |
