I agree totally, he's obviously on "our side"; I just thought the juxtaposition was flawed. But, yeah, I see your point.

I'm just talking about statistics. I used to work in criminal justice so I have some idea of the profile of someone who molests young kids. I agree that it is a mental disorder, but it is a disorder which tends to cause them to make certain life choices, of which going to bars is not usually one of them. So yes, I'm on your side. I don't think that just looking for any criminal conviction would be a good idea. Which does not mean that I am opposed to background checks. I certainly think there are some red flags you can look for, such as trespass onto school grounds, domestic accusations, or obviously a prior offense involving children, but things like DUI or POM would not raise any red flags to me.

Of course if they have 5 DUI arrests, you might not want to hire them for other reasons besides being worried about them messing with a kid.

My point is that while a background check is always a good idea, it should be used as one of many tools for evaluating a job prospect and should not be used as a bar to employment per se.

Never heard it narrowed down like that. I've always seen it as "misconduct involving a controlled substance" (MICS) followed by the degree of said misconduct.

Dear johntpartee,

I believe fladude is using "Florida Lawyer lingo" - and in Florida, everything is more than a little, well, strange. Very Happy

Dear johntpartee:

I think the POM designation might be fairly common in places where marijuana is considered to be in a 'softer' category of controlled substance. But that may be the effects of my having lived in the Netherlands for an extended period of time.

Best,
spiral
