A friend of mine was offered a teaching position in SA but he turned it down. The main reason was not that they keep your passport but according to him, you are not allowed to dring alcohol while you're living there? Is this true?
I'm not a drinker so it wouldn't matter to me. He also told me that they offered hime around $60,000 dollars a year.
Does that sound accurate? If so I may be heading to SA when I finish my MA in Education in June. Viva SA!!! |

Dear EFLeducator,
Alcohol is illegal (but that doesn't stop many from making their own - of course, there are risks.)
$60,000 sounds right, if you have an MA (in TESOL or Applied Linguistics; an MA in Education may not cut it with the good employers) and the right experience (they much prefer three years in the Middle East.)
Regards,
John |

After many years of research and study, it's been concluded that moving to Saudi Arabia is the most effective cure to that particular malady...
It's the first thing that hit my brain-pan after reading the post! |

I knew teetotalers who became alcoholics there - and alcoholics who became teetotalers.

There are plenty of Saudis and expats that drink. Just because it's illegal doesn't mean it's not available...everything you take for granted in the west is available here in KSA...the risks attached to these activities/vices however are much higher...be discreet and make sure you have trust worthy connections, if you dare to venture underground.
Personally, I chose not to go down that road, just too much hassle and complications to make it worth my while...not to mention the mental and physical problems associated with it. Anyways, I am clean and sober now. Took me awhile to learn my lessons, but think I have figured it out now |
