When exactly do you pay this? Does it differ from prefecture to prefecture?
I arrived in Japan in August 2010 and of course, I didn't have to pay anything the first year. However, I received a bill in September 2011 for about 4000 yen, which I paid immediately. Since then though, I haven't heard a thing which has left me wondering when I can expect another bill in the post...
I have heard stories on the internet about it being quite expensive, and I am trying to budget accordingly since I am also studying for my Master's Degree (which again, isn't cheap).
Many thanks,
Rich |

Thanks Glenski. I think I have found my answer. I received the initial letter back in August telling me to pay in 4 installments, but I was expecting a reminder. In fact, my friend who started work at the same time as me just told me he was late on one of the installments, and was sent a reminder and charged 100 yen extra. Strange how I haven't had any such letter? I will take a trip to City Hall after work today. |

How did the visit to the city office go?
They don't usually send reminders unless you are very late. Normally in summer sometime (for me it's usually June) you are sent the forms that you can use to pay at the banks (or convenience stores in some areas) which have the amounts and due dates, and it's then up to you to pay on time. |

You don't have to be all that late with your payments. It all depends on your city office.
Someone in my area got one of those reminders early during the 2nd week of Jan for not paying by the end of Dec. They had simply forgotten to do it before they went on holiday and had a nice red reminder waiting when they returned.
How common is it to get convenience store payslips? My last yakusho only gave us the most annoying payment forms for resident tax and NHI without barcodes which we had to take to a PO during banking hours to pay. When I went to ask about whether I could pay in the convenience store, I don't know whether the women was being anal or not (they had a nasty habit of not volunteering any info that wasn't specifically asked for), but she told me that I couldn't pay that way and that I had to take that form to a bank. So I was really suprised when my current yakusho sent me convenience store payment slips for my NHI.
Was that woman just being a royal pain? Can all yakusho issue convenience store payment slips? |

I've just been to the city hall and they said...I don't have anything to pay!
Usually I would be rejoicing at this news, but it seems too good to be true. Ok, I only worked from August-December in 2010 and I did pay a small amount in June, but my American neighbor started work at the same time as me and has had to pay all four installments.
I guess it would explain why I haven't had any reminders in the post. I'm going to speak to my boss about it tomorrow. Very strange. |

That seems to depend on the municipality as well. When I lived in one of Tokyo's wards I was issued tax payment slips with a barcode for conbini payments, but when I moved to one of the more outlying cities of Tokyo I didn't have that option with the tax payment slips.
Of course there's always the direct debit option, but the amount of paperwork you have to do to set that up always seemed like more trouble than it was worth- since I have never worked a Mon-Fri job paying at the bank has never been a major hassle. Conbini is definitely the easiest though. |

That sounds like good news to me! Your bills for the 2011 tax year will be arriving in a few months' time, so I wouldn't worry about looking for any other taxes to pay |
