| Hello! I repeat, the vast majority of women cover their head...that should indicate to you that yes, it is important. If in doubt just bring the scarf with you and put it on when you need to... |

Saudi women cover everything, non-Saudi Moslem women cover the hair with a scarf, while non-Moslem women just wear a black cloak from the neck down.
I wear shorts. Never had a problem. |

Do you wear them to the mall or walking down Olaya Street? If so you must be a bit off your rocker madam.
I have never ever seen a woman wearing shorts in all the years I have lived in KSA. Guess that doesn't mean squat, I admit.... |

Hello,
I have never been to Riyadh and have a few questions:
Can a woman shop at the mall alone ?
Can she just wear the abaya or does she have to cover her head too ?
What is the cost of living like ? (Compared to the UAE, Qatar, or Oman ?)
Are the any all female gyms that a woman can join outside the compound ?
What is the social life like for a woman ?
Finally has anyone heard of Kingdom Schools ?
Thank-you ! |
My husband's Saudi and lives in Riyadh. Riyadh is VERY Conservative compared to Jeddah for example. Yeah you can shop in the malls alone. Malls have just days for men, days for just women, and days for families, everything in Saudi is catered to the family.
In Riyadh I would wear hijab. As I mentioned above it is very conservative and they are rather picky about that.
Riyadh's expensive. Oman's cheap and one of the poorer GCC countries. Probably cheaper than UAE. Not sure about Qatar. Apartments in Saudi are paid at six month intervals (so you would pay for six months of rent on an apartment, not every month like in USA).
Not sure to be honest. I know some of the Saudi men consider it 'bad' if a girl goes to a gym, even if it is an all women gym.
HA! If you are looking to drink you are out of luck. It's illegal to bring in alcohol (not that stops people). Porn is illegal. Drugs can carry the death penalty if you smuggle them in. No clubs. No brothels. Everything is inactive until night time due to the heat. During the night is when things get lively with families who come out to enjoy the malls or go out to eat in restaurants. Women in Saudi visit their homes (a custom of Saudis is if you are invited to someone's home then you have to invite them to your home-I found this out by Dh telling me after he dropped me off at my representative's home to spend time my representative's wife and some other Saudi women who were married to some of Dh's friends). The women love shopping, though you will find it strange in the lingera stores as men work in them. Of course the Muttaween (religious police) patrol and it is common to see Saudi women with their children and their maids/nannies following who are responsible for caring for the children.
I have never heard of Kingdom Schools before but I can ask my husband and see if he has heard of them. |

This is not true.

Everything? Try bringing your family to a football match. And the majority of dining establishments don't allow women diners.

Not true. Do you know how encompassing the word 'everything' is?

Do you mean lingerie? not true anymore, the last five times I've patronized an establishment it had Saudi females working there. Maybe not 100 percent of them yet but that is the government mandate.
OP, I'm sorry that you have to weed through so much misinformation on this forum. |

The heat??? While KSA can get extremely hot during summer months, it is actually quite pleasant now. Celcius = High teens and low 20s during the day and dips down during the night ...for me this is quite pleasant. During the summer most expats take off to avoid the extreme summer heat.
Part of Nov. most of Dec., all of Jan. and Feb., most of Mar., and perhaps part of Apr. are not that hot, in fact, it can actually get quite cold during some of the winter season, at least in Riyadh.
It is easy to fall into the generalization trap...most people abroad think KSA is always hot...this is not true. As you well know...most basic facts about KSA and way of life can easily be found by searching alternative internet sites...
