Hi everyone

I'm planning to come to Vietnam shortly and have tried to get my Canadian criminal record check in advance. But when I went to Vancouver Police (on Cambie) to fill in a form, they said I needed to have the employer's name first. I don't have a teaching job yet. Is there any way (or a different branch) where I can get the criminal record check without having a job lined up first?

Thanks for your help.

Ali

I and many others successfully mail requests from foreign countries and the form does not require an employer. You should ask again but avoid whoever gave you that info. It's wrong. Plain and simple.

Thanks so much, VietCanada. Very helpful. I'll go there again today and try again.

Cheers

Good day,

I recently did the same thing myself.

When I went to the RCMP, they were more than happy to do a check for me, and no, they did not need the name of the employer. However, the snag that I hit was that when I tried to do a VS check as a part of it, with fingerprints and the rest, they told me that they no longer do those checks for Canadians that are leaving to work overseas. If your Vietnamese employer requires the Vulnerable Sector check as well, it must be initiated from a Canadian consulate in Vietnam where you can be fingerprinted as well.

I thought that this was rather odd, but I tried a couple different stations (I was on the East coast, but there shouldn't be that much difference from where you are!) and they said this was a relatively recent change. So, I just got them to do the ordinary check which is still country-wide rather than local, and that's all that I have.

I hope that was helpful!

Cheers.

Thanks for the advice about fingerprinting, rpayvin.

I did go back to Vancouver Police on Cambie when a different person was on duty (as suggested), and this time was allowed to fill in the form without naming an employer. I just put Employer in Vietnam. I noticed that when I handed the form in, the guy on duty wrote in this section "For personal use".

I did tick the box for Vulnerable Sector, whatever it's called, but wasn't fingerprinted..so that explains why.

They told me the criminal record clearance would be mailed to me in three weeks, so it hasn't arrived yet.

Thanks to both of you for all the advice.

Cheers, Ali
