I've been through the links, and there's no big surprises. I'm not about to stock up on toothpaste or deodorant here, what they sell in Japan can't possibly be worse than what they sell in Ecuador. Though I do have a little of both that I've brought from the UK and was planning to bring anyway. I also have plenty of hose/tights packed already, again from the UK, not Ecuadorian.

I did see coffee mentioned a few times. Is that recommended just as a practical/useful gift or because it's difficult to get good coffee there? I can bring a couple of bags (for me or as a gift) if it's needed. I will have some British teabags packed, but I expect to have to take them wherever I go.

Oh, as for deodorant, in Japan they don't sell the stick deodorant, which is also antiperspirant. i7d load up a couple of those if I were you.

Google fbc japan.

They have stick deo and all sorts of stuff you might like/ need. Also, there is flying pig, another website. They both deliver to your door and it is COD!

Someone above mentioned Book Off. You can find all kinds of treasure there. I also recommend signing up with Freecycle Tokyo. I've given away heaps of books, and gotten some good things, through the network.

As for food, personal care products and the like, anything can be found in suburban Tokyo. Used electronics are dirt cheap.

Surviving in Japan Without Much Japanese has a good general list for people moving to Japan. http://www.survivingnjapan.com/2010/07/moving-to-japan-read-this-first.html#0_undefined,0_

If you have a favourite kind of deodorant, especially the stick ones, bring a bunch of them. You might find the same one over here, but you probably won't, and the big brands they do have (Lynx/Axe seems most common) will cost you perhaps five times the price they do in England. Same for moisturisers etc, although there's more of a choice if you're willing to experiment.

Everything else, no problem.

Medicines
This may be the trickiest. What are your needs? Some meds cannot be brought into Japan. Prescriptions might need a doctor's note.

This is also a concern of mine. I may be heading to Japan later this year on a job hunt. I already checked, the meds I take are legal and prescribed in Japan. However, in the event that I can't find a job quickly (or at all) and my supply runs low, can they be obtained from a doctor by a person on a tourist visa without health insurance?

I already know the cost will be higher but I need to know if they will be accessible. I can't go for more than 3 days without them. Thanks in advance if anyone can shed some light on this.

Depends. A lot of medicine here is not over the counter. Stuff like Allegra is prescription only. Other medicines, such as heartburn medicine are pretty hard to find. I'd bring a whole bunch of what I need with me, if I were you.

That's what I mean, non-OTC stuff. I'll bring what I can but I can never be certain it's enough. It would be nice to know if it is indeed obtainable for a person in my circumstance.
