|
|
Hey guys,
I often see this "teaching experience for 3 yrs" etc requirement, and I often see them write "at university level." I'm wondering if that really matters? Can we just teach at High School level and make up for the requirement? Because frankly we can't teach at university level in the States without a PHD!!!
I don't get why they want this requirement... |

That's not exactly true. There is a significant number of MAs that are teaching in IEPs... the common ESL departments in universities and community colleges all over the US. When they put this requirement, they are looking for people who have taught Academic English for college prep. In particular, they are usually looking for teachers who have taught Academic Writing or reading.
So, if you are teaching a similar sort of thing in High School, you might be able to use your experience.

Thanks for your replies!
Does the experience have to be after the MA or can it be before? Because I have some ESL teaching experience at undergrad. college level (while I was doing my BA) |

Post Masters is normally required, but we're talking Saudi Arabia here.
It's not the place of a "dream job", just ask EDYSI! |

The thing is that many ads say that it must be after the MA, but if you have only one year after... but many years before, they will look at it. If it is related experience, they often recognize it for hiring, but NOT for pay scale. That said, not that many Gulf jobs have an official published pay scale with steps.
It is all about supply and demand in the end. The more you have to offer, the better your chances with the better employers.

An ever-changing ideal! These days I imagine teaching English at a humane society, mostly to prep level kittens. Instead of a classroom there would be a majlis-like situation, a lot of soft cushions and the like, but not of the variety which cats like to scratch.
I would sit there with the textbook and try to make them pay attention, but they would be more interested in my tie, or my toes wiggling in my socks. "Pay attention!" I'd say, but they don't yet understand imperatives and so I would resign to just playing with the kittens, letting them jump all over me. I'd take Dairy Queen receipts form my pocket and ball them up, throwing them around for the kittens to bat at.
All the horse play would exhaust us, and we would fall asleep as we listen to the faint sound of jetliners descending overhead, landing over at Dreamland International. |

The rule is that the riues are flexible. Everything is negotiable - even the idea of negotiating. Read Al;ice in Wonderland. |
