Can HKers tell me if they have any problems going online for their own personal use in HK (using Social Media/blogging as well)? I know in China it seems bad but it kind of puts you off thinking of teaching there/ |

No problems at all in HK. "One country, two systems" is definitely working for freedom of speech and information access |

I find it slow, especially having come from Korea, but there is no problem accessing any site whatsoever... |

OK
'So I am going to assume I can blog to my hearts content and access my bank information etc etc with no worries?
Seems strange that you say that though in view of the takeover... |

Yes, you can blog, access news, online banking (which IME is no problem on the mainland in any case) etc. etc. etc. ad nauseam.
As I noted before, the "One country, two systems" pledge is working well in HK - and in Macau. The only material differences I have noted since 1997 are that "Royal" has been removed from names such as the SPCA and HK Police, and that the Post Office livery has changed from red and blue to (shudder) green and purple.
As you don't seem to have done much independent research on geopolitics in this area, I don't know if it's news to you that Hong Kong also maintains its own border controls/ immigration service, currency, education system, security services (a great relief to the vast majority of its residents!), and we still drive on the left. |
