When my contract ends I am looking to go to another school/university as soon as it happens(not to go back to my home country) and move into their apartments. This would be during the Summer time,but I am wondering while I am looking now that if a school offers me a position is it unreasonable to ask to have the contract sign by the head boss (meaning not have a sample contract like you would get before startinga job) before I move into the apartment/teaching housing? I do not want to go by a verbal promise and tell my current boss I am leaving and all of the sudden the school that made the offer changes their mind.

Once they send you the contract to sign, tell them that you could move in August. Most university positions end by July 1 st. I'm not sure if they will let you stay rent free for two months. My contract ends July 30 th, so I think that it is OK to stay until close to that time. I used to live in Hefei, before I came to Xian and I sent my stuff to Xian by China Railway Express and it was only 780 RMB for 25 boxes. Around 10 of them were books. I had them to ship to arrive in 10 days and when I arrived 6 weeks later, all of my boxes were in my new apartment and the FAO secretary, deducted 300 RMB from my pay to cover the freight from the train station and then to my apartment on the 5 th floor.

i was worried about contract start dates when i moved, had the
new school add a clause to the contract that the apartment would
be available over the summer. (also had 'em change the start
date to july 1st with pay beginning september 1st to avoid
any problems with registration and rp's from july 1st)

the school apartments/housing should be available if the
former teacher is leaving. can't really imagine why they'd refuse.
the apartment is empty, costs them nothing but utilities, and
with you there, it confirms that they actually will have a teacher
for the fall. if you move in, less chance you'll be looking for better
paying jobs.

the school i left normally required the teachers to leave over the
summer, put things in storage....even if returning.

the sample contract (i assume) is used to get your invitation letter
for a visa. you're already here. you should be able to sign the real
contract anytime. why not?

Are you saying I should also have them add in the contract the aparment will be available to me during the date I need to move in with my start date in which I get paid will be Aug/SEPT

The only way I would accept a position is if I could move in during June and start work on Aug/Sept.
So you are saying it should be no problem for the new employeer to sign the real contract as soon as they offer me the position and not a sample one like you get before coming to China? Is it really important to have put into the contract that I can arrive at the apartment early and the start date to begin later?

strange situation. the school had a hotel on campus where the
teachers lived. multiple chains of command - had to deal with
at least three departments to get a shower-head fixed. the ft's
would be given 1500/month in housing allowance, which
coincidentally was the rental fee charged by the hotel. (or it
could be used for off-post housing) housing allowance was not
paid during the summer (nor was salary). i s'pose i kinda mistyped
when i said they 'required' the teachers to leave. they could stay,
but on their own mao. the other ft's would leave over the summer
store their things at a friend's place. it was very trouble.

@HH: i'm not aware of any regulations barring them from signing
a contract six months or even a year prior to commencement date.
you should check with some of the forum members who are involved
in personnel. it may or may not be important to state when the
apartment will be available. due to my situation, it was important
to me, so i asked to have it added to the contract.

They require this so that they can turn off the utilities ( air conditioning) and not be liable for the damage caused by mildew in the summer. My former employer didn't require me to put anything in storage, but I was required to vacate. When I returned the whole place was a mess.

This is more common than you think, since most staff at universities leave during the holidays they usually ask the foreigners to vacant or will offer alternative accommodation in a city hotel. Hardly what I would call a secure home.

I worked for a college that informed me that I'd have to move into a hotel in the city for the summer at my expense. The word was that the school intended to rent out the FT's quarters to Chinese teachers. It was not part of the contract.
