I met a teacher last night that claims she was recruited from America and accepted a job for $300 a month???

Does she have a B.A.? Yes!

TESOL? "Yes!"

Are they paying her? "No!" "They're 6 weeks behind!"

Will she quit? "No, she's under contract!"

Did they forget to add a zero to the salary? "No!"

Shocked

All I'll say about the school is that they're based in the Midwest.

I'm not sure if she took the TESOL there.

That's pretty unbelievable!

Could it be some kind of "volunteer" teaching gig, e.g. she's not in it for the money and has been told she's teaching disadvantaged youths who are not paying to study, and the $300 is just a small meal stipend or something??

If you know, you really should post the name of this school, as someone so helpfully did regarding Maple Bear recently. Although I think it's quite ludicrous that ANYONE (expat) would work FT for those wages, this is Vietnam...

And for anyone out there thinking about working for peanuts and driving the wages down for the experienced and well-qualified teachers here, for your own good and ours, do NOT work for anything less than $10 / teaching hour, please (extremely on the low end at that).

There are professionals trying to make a living here!

If a school is 6wks behind paying 300$ then you should run run run.

As you can see you really have to be careful with these schools. Several teachers and myself have all quit CitySmart/Maple Bear over payment issues and I recommend other do the same. Mistakes do happen, and we need to be patience, but if I am having trouble paying my obligations because my school cannot pay theirs, I am not going to continue. Nothing is worse for a school to lose good teachers for stupid reasons.

I read a quote recently that hit home: you can't get stepped on, if your not lying down first...something like.

First off, you met a teacher WHO claims, not THAT claims.

Past that, I find something strange about so many people posting responses when we have so little information. I'm also lost as to the purpose of the post: 1. To let us know that she's working for $300 a month, or 2. To let us know that she hasn't been paid what she told you she's earning?

There are various reasons why people work overseas. Not all humans are motivated by the greenback.
