Unless you're teaching Legal English...

When I was talking about "Why is English considered Germanic?", I was referring to invasions, and language take-overs, rather than pronunciation Smile

But, good to see knowledge on the subject, yes? Smile)

They're called cognates, and the etymological reasons for their existence should be interesting for anyone with more than a passing interest in the subject they're teaching. I suppose that most FTs aren't really that interested in the subject enough to educate themselves. For those who are, I recommend Skeat's Concise Etymological Dictionary of the English Language. While you're at it, you can pick up the COBUILD English Grammar reference and get a handle on what makes the language tick.

I found Skeat on amazon.cn. Care to recommend one of the versions? Please?

Dang that's a long url.

TIA.

As they're all the same edition, I'd either go with the cheapest one for value or the hardcover for durability.

If one works 18 hours per week and teaches 2-3 different subjects, it isn't walk in the park. It's quite stressful to prepare for an American History class, an oral English Class, and a writing class. Just ONE writing class properly taught will eat up your free time and stress you out if you really care about the quality of your work.

While a newcomer to China may have "tons of time" for travel, the likelihood that his salary will allow him to do much long distance traveling is slim. A BA + no experience + some sort of certificate will get him a low-paying job in the boonies, in all likelihood.
